Mike’s Movie Quest 2017

It all started with a trip to Tinseltown on New Year’s Day. Sing was sold out, so why not see Why Him? And with that, I took a journey through an eventual 493 films over the course of 365 days, an absurd 41 movies a month, 1.35 movies a day. Not to mention, on top of all of that, I kept up on all my current TV shows, as well as rewatched the entire series of many others (Lost, Sports Night, Community, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc). Imagine if I had cut TV out of my diet entirely?

What could have sparked this is my obsession with IMDb.com. I love keeping track of what I’ve done and seen, and love having lists to validate and remind myself. Towards the end of 2016, according to IMDb I was closing in on 1,000 movies seen, maybe I was at 800-something, so why not make the push for 1,000 in 2017, and if that, why not go for 365? It felt ambitious, with a veil of laziness. A perfect mission for me.

Another factor could have been I felt like my movie expertise was void of many classics. Classics in many senses of the word. The first, referring back to IMDb, was evaluating their list of the “Top 250” films of all time. An ever-changing list, as new movies are released and receive acclaim, but most stay constant and I had seen a mere 60 of them going into 2017. By the end of my quest, I am now at 120, doubling my “classic” film intake. The other connotation associated with the word “classic” derives from word of mouth, my friends and the standard question, “you’ve never seen…!? That’s a classic.”  Where was I in the 90s when Wild Wild West and Men in Black were all the rage? Don’t judge me. By the way, both hold up, as silly as that sounds.

When I would tell people what I was doing this past year, they were amazed and had a lot of interesting questions. “Why?,” being the most common, obviously. And, but honestly, it was just a fun project/goal and something to do with friends and family. It was great seeing people’s reactions when I would show them my list, seeing them laud over their favorites, or reminisce about a movie they hadn’t seen in years. Here’s a few of my favorite questions people asked.

“How did you choose what movie to watch?”

This goes back to my last two points on IMDb and word of mouth. Pre-movie adventure Mike would go through IMDb for hours and utilize the Watchlist feature. I had somewhere in the ballpark of 400 movies tabbed on my watchlist throughout this journey and currently 132 stand, many of which were added this year so far mind you. So any given night I could scroll through and pick something out off the watchlist. The other choices were made with other people, as many spontaneous movies were watched, or not necessarily my choice, the awful awful awful Baywatch for example. But when you’re trying to watch as many movies as you can, nothing is off limits. Other times it would be as simple as someone saying, “Have you seen…?” and if the answer was no, I would go home and watch said movie.

“How many indie vs. blockbuster?”

This was the most interesting question I was asked. In the moment, I said that the split is something like 33.33/66.66. One third seemed like a decent guess at the time. The more I thought about it, the more daunting of a task it seemed to figure out a true answer. To do that, I would have to likely go to every Wikipedia page of each movie and look up the original distributor and I just don’t have that in me. I will say that I likely went to our local independent theatre, The Little, about as much as I went to Tinseltown to see a blockbuster film and if a film was playing at both, I would push to see it at The Little. So, Dave, if you are reading this I hope this gives a little insight and the list at the end can inform you better.

What was the ratio of good to bad movies?”

I loved this question. Rather than go back and try to figure out the answer, the more fun response is that I honestly hoped that I would love every movie I saw. Most of them I was interested in seeing, so it would be a disappointment if I didn’t enjoy the movie, especially if I spent money to see it in the theatre. But, there were a lot of sucky movies that I watched on purpose. For example, there would be times I would purposefully have a “bad” comic book movie marathon where a buddy and I would watch a string of the 1990 Captain America, 1994 Fantastic Four, and Howard the Duck among others. I obviously wasn’t going in with great expectations, but it was a fun Sunday. Everything is subjective though, so there were plenty of classic, universally renowned films that I didn’t connect with. Cohen brother movies are ones that I specifically have trouble with. Fargo is one of my favorite movies, yet No Country For Old Men didn’t do anything for me. It’s reputation carries a lot of weight and that merits a rewatch at some point, however, so on second viewing my feelings may change. Similarly with Christopher Nolan, I usually love everything he has done, but Interstellar was one I had no interest in when it came out and when I watched it this year, I found it awful in every way. Overall though, the majority of films I watched this year, I enjoyed, which I also attribute to it being a terrific year for movies in general. Narrowing it down to my top 20 was a daunting task and I had to leave off many great films even from that.

“What was the best movie you saw?”

The best movies I saw this year were movies that were released this year. I think that is a testament to how strong of a year it was for film culture, but it also says something about the experience of seeing films in the theatre as opposed to your home. It’s disheartening to read that 2017 had the lowest ticket sales since 1992. It’s not surprisingly seeing the rise of streaming services producing their own original content and acquiring streaming rights to popular movies, and the article does state that revenue has not taken a hit, but volume is down. Even though the general public isn’t going to the movies as much, I clearly did. At the end of the year, what held up most in my mind was John Wick: Chapter 2. You can read all about why in my end of the year post, but all in all it served as an excellent sequel, easily surpassing the first. Do I think it was the most powerful, or thoughtful film of the year? Of course not, but it was the most entertaining and captivating of the lot, and I’m excited to see the John Wick universe grow.

Final Thoughts:

After all that, I wasn’t even close to the Guinness World Record! Can you believe that? The record is 1,132 set by a woman in Puerto Rico in 2010. I wasn’t even close. Maybe one day.

I wanted to publish this after January was through to see how many films I would see without feeling the need to watch movies constantly. I feel a great sense of relief not having to seeing movies that are new to me. I started off the year watching the Austin Power trilogy because I was no longer tied to watching movies I hadn’t seen. Yeah baby!, it was liberating! But now that I am a movie slave, without trying, throughout the first month of 2018, I’m on pace to watch more than 365, having seen 32 previously unseen movies. Do I think I will get even close to that number? No. But, it will be interesting to see what happens.

For your amusement, here’s the final list of every movie I watched in 2017:
